SOUTHPORT DRAMATIC CLUB at THE LITTLE THEATRE

2023

The Southport Dramatic Club established in 1920, and based at the Little Theatre, commissioned an artwork in celebration of the centenary of the theatrical organisation.

The commission was to produce artwork for one wall, positioned in the main foyer.  The work needed to reflect the heritage and growth of the Southport Dramatic Club, and suggest narratives; a history of time and place.

‘In Every Grain of Sand’ is an exhibition inspired by ‘time and place’.

Sources for the work are the Sefton coastline; old photographs; and

memories and recollections, together with the words of poets, such

as Gerard Manley Hopkins and William Blake. There is a suggestion

of remembrance and the passage of time, and an aim to draw

attention to the detail of our environment.

To resonate with the smallest fragments, to be sensitively

aware of the significance, simplicity and importance of the

beauty and fragility that surrounds us.

To see a world in a grain of sand

And a heaven in a wild flower

Hold infinity in the palm of your hand

And eternity in an hour

                                           Extract from ‘Auguries of Innocence’

                                                     by William Blake.

'Auguries of Innocence' pits the innocent against the mature, the rich against

the poor, the elite against the underprivileged, and invites the audience to

recognize the fragile beauty and balance found within nature

MERSEY CARE NHS workshops

Just heard the news……..Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust is intending to enter the ‘Who Do We Think We Are’ art project, completed during 2019 with Sefton Young Carers, into the National Service User Awards 2021.

Following an exhibition at The Atkinson Gallery and Museum in 2019, Sharon was offered a commission from Mersey Care NHS to create some art work to be installed in the newly built hospital for mental health in Southport.

In conjunction with the production of the two artworks, Sharon also led a number of workshop activities over two months engaging with Sefton Young Carers from the area. During the workshops the children created paintings, developed ideas for printed t-shirt designs, and produced decorative boxes.

Hartley Hospital combines local mental health inpatient care and related community services. There are 40 bedrooms and patients have access to inner garden courtyards, therapy and activity areas. There is also a short-term assessment suite, on-site café for patients, visitors and staff, a family visiting room, sacred space, gym and outpatient services. Sharon created two artworks on canvas 120cm x 50cm to be placed in the family visiting area of the hospital.  The works produced were created in response to the planned internal areas will of the hospital which were to reflect qualities that connect it to the Sefton coastline,
